Building a fairer, healthier world

On World Health Day, 7 April 2022, we will be inviting you to join a new campaign to build a fairer, healthier world. We’ll be posting more details here shortly, but here’s why we’re doing this:

A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, and to express a relation to another word or element in the clause.

When a preposition consists of one word it is called a single or simple preposition.

In/at/on/after/above/beneath/by

A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences. Conjunctions are an invariable grammar particle, and they may or may not stand between items they conjoin.

Our world is an unequal one.

As COVID-19 has highlighted, some people are able to live healthier lives and have better access to health services than others. This entirely due to the conditions in which they are born, grow, live, work and age.

1st And > coordinating conjunction connecting two phrases.

2nd And > coordinating conjunction connecting two words.

Vocabulary

Entirely (adverb): completely, solely (often used for emphasis).

• The traffic seemed to consist entirely of taxis.

All over the world, some groups struggle to make ends meet with little daily income. They have poorer housing conditions, as well as fewer employment opportunities. They are also subjected to greater gender inequality, and have little or no access to safe environments, clean water and air, food security and health services. This leads to unnecessary suffering, avoidable illness, and premature death. And it harms our societies and economies.

Phrase Prepositions

Group of words used with the force of a single preposition is called phrase preposition.

According to/by means of/owing to/with a view to/in place of/in front of/in spite of/ instead of/ in order to/by virtue of/ by way of/ as well as

Vocabulary

Subjected (verb): cause or force someone or something to undergo

• The city has been subjected to draconian law.

Inequality (noun): difference in size, degree, circumstances, etc.; lack of equality

• Inequality is an issue we have faced from the dawn of time.

Premature(adjective): occurring or done before the usual or proper time; too early.

• The sun can cause premature ageing.

This is not only unfair it is also preventable. That’s why we are calling on leaders to ensure that everyone has living and working conditions that are conducive to good health.  At the same time, we urge leaders to monitor health inequities, and to ensure that all people are able to access quality health services when and where they need them.

Vocabulary

Conducive (adjective): making a certain situation or outcome likely or possible.

• Harsh lights and cameras were hardly conducive to a relaxed atmosphere.

Inequities (noun): lack of fairness or justice

• There are huge inequities in the distribution of research funding.

COVID-19 has hit all countries hard, but its impact has been harshest on those communities which were already vulnerable, who are more exposed to the disease, less likely to have access to quality health care services and more likely to experience adverse consequences as a result of measures implemented to contain the pandemic.

Vocabulary

Harshest (verb): unpleasantly rough or jarring to the senses.

• This has been the harshest winter in many years.
